The Department of Electrical Insulation covers two secondary disciplines: High Voltage and Insulation Technology and Physical Chemistry of Materials. The major of Electrical Insulation was founded in 1953, and the Electrical Insulation Research Laboratory was established in 1963, which was one of the 18 research laboratories directly affiliated the Ministry of Education at that time. In 1982, it was approved as the unique doctoral degree conferring site and post-doctoral station in the discipline of Electrical Materials and Insulation Technology in China. In 1988, it was approved as a national key discipline. In 1989, State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment was approved to construct, and then a laboratory with 5600 m2 was built. The State Key Laboratory passed the national assessment in 1995, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018 respectively.
