【Introduction】
The Summer School on Key Technologies for Advanced Electric Power Equipment will be organized by School of Electrical Engineering and State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment, Xi’an Jiaotong University. The course features a series of lectures delivered by renowned international experts and young scholars in the field of electric power equipment. It is open to undergraduate students (freshmen to juniors) of Xi’an Jiaotong university offline. Other students can only participate online.
Participants will engage in about 16 hours of intensive lectures. Students will learn about cutting-edge advancements in electric power equipment technology through an introduction to the School of Electrical Engineering and a tour of the State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment.

Dr. Mohammad Shahidehpour is a University Distinguished Professor and Galvin Chair Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He also serves as the Director of the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at IIT. He has over 45 years of experience with power system operation, planning, and control and has completed several major projects for the electric energy sector throughout the world. His project on Perfect Power Systems has converted the entire IIT Campus to an islandable microgrid. Dr. Shahidehpour was the recipient of several technical awards including the IEEE Burke Hayes Award for his research on hydrokinetics, IEEE/PES Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award, IEEE/PES Ramakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award, IEEE/PES Douglas M. Staszesky Distribution Automation Award, and the Edison Electric Institute’s Power Engineering Educator Award. He has co-authored 6 books and over 1000 technical papers on electric power system operation and planning, and served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. Dr. Shahidehpour is the recipient of the 2009 honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. He is a Fellow of IEEE, Chinese Society of Electric Engineers (CSEE), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and National Academy of Inventors (NAI). He is an academician of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He is also listed as a highly cited researcher on the Web of Science (ranked in the top 1% by citations demonstrating significant influence among his peers).

Dushan Boroyevich received his Dipl. Ing. degree from the University of Belgrade in 1976 and his M.S. degree from the University of Novi Sad in 1982, in what then used to be Yugoslavia. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1986 from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA. Between 1986 and 1990, he was an assistant professor and director of the Power and Industrial Electronics Research Program at the University of Novi Sad. He then joined the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech as associate professor. He retired from Virginia Tech in 2024 as University Distinguished Professor and as Associate Vice-President for Research and Innovation in Energy Systems. He continues to be active in consulting and promoting new electronic energy networks for energy transition. He was the president of IEEE Power Electronics Society for 2011-12. Dushan was a mentor for 60 Ph.D. dissertations and 50 M.S. theses.
Dushan is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and is a recipient of 5 honorary professorships in China, as well as numerous other awards, including the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Technical Field Award, the European Power Electronics Association Outstanding Achievement Award, and Ph.D.H.C. from the University of West Bohemia, Czechia. He is IEEE Life Fellow and Fellow of CSEE.

Yasunori Tanaka, Professor, Ph.D.

Yasunori Tanaka received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Nagoya University, Japan, in 1993, 1995, and 1998, respectively. In April 1998, he joined Kanazawa University, Japan, as a Research Associate. From August 2002 to March 2010, he served as an Associate Professor at the university. During this period, he was a visiting researcher at the University of California, San Diego (2005, 2006, and 2007), and at the University of Toronto (2007). Since April 2010, he has been a Professor at Kanazawa University, where he currently serves as the Head of the Division of Electronic, Information, and Communication Engineering in the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology. His research interests encompass the fundamentals and applications of both high-pressure and low-pressure thermal plasmas, employing both numerical and experimental approaches. His work focuses on areas such as nanopowder synthesis, plasma source development, plasma arc cutting, surface modification, diamond growth, and arc interruption phenomena in gas/vacuum circuit breakers.

Prof. dr. sc. Neven Duić is a full professor at the Department of Energy, Power and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture and Vice-President of Croatian Academy of Engineering. He is president of International Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES Centre).
Prof. Duić published 200 original scientific papers and 20 review papers in scientific journals referenced in WoS, of which 87 of them are in top 5% of the journal in the category (referring to ISI Web of knowledge data base). His H-index according to Scopus is 67 and according to Web of knowledge data base 60. He is on the Stanford list of 2% most influential scientists.
His main areas of interests are energy policy and planning, smart energy systems, energy economics, sustainable development policy and resource planning, climate change mitigation, energy transition, combustion engineering and modelling, research and innovation policy.
He has worked as consultant on climate change mitigation regulation, emissions trading system, renewable energy, biofuels and buildings for EU and Western Balkans governments.

Eiji Kaneko was born in Aichi prefecture, Japan on September 16th, 1952. He graduated the faculty of engineering, and the graduated school of engineering at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan in1975 and 1977, respectively. He got the doctor engineering degree from Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan in 1986.
He joined High Power Laboratory of Toshiba Corporation in 1977. As a research engineer, he researched vacuum arc phenomena and their application such as vacuum circuit breakers.
In 2002, he joined the faculty of engineering of University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. In 2018, he retired from the university and became Professor Emeritus of the University of the Ryukyus.
Since 2018, he has been with TMEIC corporation, Tokyo, Japan, as a part time Chief Engineer of the Substation Systems Engineering Department.
He is a Life Member of IEEE, Fellow and Life Member of IEEJ, and a member of CIGRE.
He is working as a member of the international scientific committee of ISDEIV (International symposium on discharges and electrical insulation in vacuum) and the vice chairman of the international steering committee of ICEPE-ST (International conference on electrical power equipment – switching technology). He joins Mongol University of Science and Technology as a visiting professor, and Tokyo Metropolitan University as a member of an advisory committee.

Akiko Kumada received the B. Eng., M. Eng., and Dr. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respectively. Since April 2017, she has been in the University of Tokyo as a professor of electrical engineering. She currently serves as vice dean of the graduate school of engineering at the University of Tokyo. Since 2024, she has been serving as a vice president of administration of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society.
She directs high voltage laboratory in the University of Tokyo, and is conducting research related to high-voltage insulation and current interruption technology for the development of high-voltage DC transmission networks and the upgrading of existing AC transmission networks.

Sergio A. Pignari is a Full Professor with the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), Italy. From 2015 to 2020, he served as the Chairman of the BSc and MSc study programs in EE at POLIMI. Since 2022, he is serving as the Executive Associate Dean of the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and Innovation, Xi'an Jiaotong University.
He is the author or co-author of more than 220. His research interests are in the field of EMC.
Dr. Pignari is a Fellow of the IEEE and CSEE. He was co-recipient of the 2005, 2016, and 2021 IEEE EMC Society Transactions Prize Paper Award, and received the IEEE EMC Society Technical Achievement Award in 2011. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility. From 2010 to 2015, he served as the IEEE EMC Society Chapter Coordinator. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Chair of the IEEE Italy Section EMC Society Chapter. From 2015-2018, he served as the Italian URSI Officer for Commission E (Electromagnetic Noise and Interference). He has been the Technical Program Chair of the ESA Workshop on Aerospace EMC since 2009, and a Member of the Technical Program Committee of the Asia-Pacific International Symposium on EMC since 2010.

Rene Peter Paul Smeets received a PhD degree for research work on switchgear in 1987. Until 1995, he was an assistant professor at Eindhoven University. During 1991 he worked with Toshiba Corporation in Japan on vacuum switchgear. In 1995, he joined KEMA, the Netherlands. At present, he is retired from KEMA Laboratories of CESI Group, but still active as an independent advisor. From 2001 - 2013 he was part-time professor at Eindhoven University, the Netherlands. In 2013 he became adjunct professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University, China, after having been connected with this university since 1987.
Dr. Smeets is member of various study/advisory committees of CIGRE after being in the lead of working groups in the field of emerging switching technologies such as HV vacuum switchgear, HVDC switchgear and SF6 alternatives. He was convener of two maintenance teams in IEC on standardization of high-voltage switchgear. In 2008 he was elected Fellow of IEEE and in 2022 he was awarded a Fellowship of CIGRE. He conducted numerous webinars and trainings on ‘switching technology in T&D systems’ for the manufacturing and utilty industry in various parts of the world.
Since 2008 he is chairman of the “Current Zero Club”, a scientific study group on current interruption. Dr. Smeets published and edited three books and authored over 300 international papers on testing and high-voltage switching technology in power systems. He received nine international awards.

Frede Blaabjerg was with ABB-Scandia, Randers, Denmark, from 1987 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he got the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at Aalborg University in 1995. He became an Assistant Professor in 1992, an Associate Professor in 1996, and a Full Professor of power electronics and drives in 1998 at AAU Energy. From 2017 he became a Villum Investigator. He is honoris causa at University Politehnica Timisoara (UPT), Romania in 2017 and Tallinn Technical University (TTU), Estonia in 2018.
His current research interests include power electronics and its applications such as in wind turbines, PV systems, reliability, Power-2-X, power quality and adjustable speed drives. He has published more than 800 journal papers in the fields of power electronics and its applications. He is the co-author of ten monographs and editor of twenty books in power electronics and its applications eg. the series (4 volumes) Control of Power Electronic Converters and Systems published by Academic Press/Elsevier.He has received 46 IEEE Prize Paper Awards, the IEEE PELS Distinguished Service Award in 2009, the EPE-PEMC Council Award in 2010, the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award 2014, the Villum Kann Rasmussen Research Award 2014, the Global Energy Prize in 2019 and the 2020 IEEE Edison Medal. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS from 2006 to 2012. He has been Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2005 to 2007 and for the IEEE Industry Applications Society from 2010 to 2011 as well as 2017 to 2018. In 2019-2020 he served as a President of IEEE Power Electronics Society. He has been Vice-President of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences. He is nominated in 2014-2021 by Thomson Reuters to be between the most 250 cited researchers in Engineering in the world.

Bang-Wook Lee, Professor

Professor Lee was born in 1968 on Jeju Island, South Korea. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in high voltage engineering from Hanyang University in 1993 and 1998, respectively. Afterward, he worked in research and development at LS Electric as a senior researcher. In 2008, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at Hanyang University as a faculty member and has been a full professor ever since. At Hanyang University, he is the Deputy Director of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Center and the Director of the Electric Fusion Research Cente and the DC grid innovation research center, a government-funded project. His research interests include high-voltage power equipment insulation design and analysis, DC grid power system and power equipment R&D. Now he is also a CIGRE SC B1 member in Korea.

Prof. CHEN Chen is a Professor in the school Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), specializes in power system resilience, active distribution systems, microgrids, demand-side resource management, and smart grid signal processing. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University (USA) in 2013, after obtaining his M.Eng. (2009) and B.Eng. (2006) degrees from XJTU. Between 2013 and 2019, he conducted postdoctoral research and later served as an Energy Systems Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory (USA), advancing innovations in grid modernization and energy optimization. Since returning to XJTU as a full professor in 2019, his interdisciplinary work integrating power engineering with communications has positioned him as a leading contributor to next-generation smart grid technologies.

Prof. ZE Qiji is a Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). He is a pioneering researcher in soft robotics and intelligent soft materials, with a focus on magnetic actuation and electromagnetic control systems. Educated entirely at Xi’an Jiaotong University, he earned his B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering and Automation (2007–2011), followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2011–2018). His international research training includes postdoctoral fellowships at The Ohio State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (2018–2021) and Stanford University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021–2022), where he honed expertise in cross-disciplinary robotics design.

Prof. DONG Tianyu is a Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), renowned for pioneering non-Hermitian physics in wireless power transfer and metamaterial-based electromagnetic regulation. Educated entirely at Xi’an Jiaotong University, he earned his B.Eng. (2008) and Ph.D. (2014) under the mentorship of Prof. Ma Xikui, with a pivotal visiting scholarship at Penn State University’s EMC Lab (2011–2013) supervised by electromagnetic luminary Prof. Raj Mittra. Promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and Full Professor in 2023, he leads the Advanced Electromagnetic Regulation and Energy Conversion Technology Research Center (CAEMEC) and serves as Deputy Director of the Transient Electromagnetic Environment International Joint Research Center (TEA).

Eric Moal was born in 1967. He obtained his Engineering Degree from the ENSEM (Ecole Nationale d’Electricité et de Mécanique) in Nancy (France) in 1990. He works in the field of High Voltage Transmission and Distribution insulation expertise for overhead lines and substations apparatus since more than 30 years. He is currently working as CTO & Chief External Insulation Technical Expert of SHEMAR Group. He is also member of several CIGRE, IEEE, NEMA and IEC standardization working groups, as member, Chair of IEC TC36 (Insulators) and as Convenor for IEC TC36 / MT24 (Substation insulators composite/polymer/hybrid) group.
